Dollar Decor - Kiddo Edition

Of course the inspiration for this post comes from where else?  Pinterest!  It's funny.  I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest.

I love to look, gather ideas, plan and flat out day dream when looking at Pinterest boards.  I love taking ideas and running with them and then creating something original and unique from that initial starting point.  I don't love how much time I spend pinning those said ideas sometimes and/or making an exact replica of anything I see.  I will even try to tweak recipes so they aren't exactly the same.  It's just one of my pet peeves.

This dollar decor idea however, is 100% customizable and can be used in hundreds of ways (see the bottom of this post for more useful ideas).  With Nursery #2 on my mind lately, I am always looking for inexpensive, yet creative wall art.  This teacher friendly website hit both dead on.

Sharing is Caring

It is no secret that I love organizing.

As I was reading one of my favorite blogs that just happens to be entitled I Heart Organizing, I found a great tip that I thought I would share.

This tip, although found on the I Heart Organizing website actually came from a different blog entitled Two Twenty One.  Chelsea, the Two Twenty One contributor has figured out an easy and cheap (woo-hoo) way to keep track of old Christmas cards.

I love to pull mine out each year (I store them with my Christmas decorations) and see how much everyone has changed, but wad definitely in need of a better way to view/display/organize them from year to year.  Well friends, I found the answer thanks to the awesome blogs listed above:

Christmas card books!

IMG_9671

With just a hole punch, book rings and cardstock you can create the perfect card keeper.

IMG_9672

For the full, step by step tutorial with downloadable book “covers” click here.

Tips:

--The tutorial recommends making separate books for separate years, but since we didn’t have tons of cards per year, I just made one book with multiple years represented separated by different covers which actually just double as dividers.

--Don’t forget to print a few extra for the years to come while you have the printer warmed up and the cardstock available!

Nursery Update #2

Well, there are two things I know for sure…

1.  This whole baby thing is actually going to happen.  Hitting 30 weeks and only having 10 weeks left is crazy to me!

2.  I am in love with how the nursery is turning out.  I love to just go in there, turn on the light and sit.  It puts me in a relaxed mood…I’m hoping it will do the same for our little one, too!

Here are some of the updates/additions we’ve made since the last nursery post (found here):

1.  Crib, Artwork and Mobile:

IMG_9655

We purchased our crib (a gift from my dad) from IKEA.  I love the grayish-brown color and also how sturdy it feels.  It is simple, yet classic – my favorite combination.

Our crib mattress was a Black Friday purchase (along with our monitor) at Babies R Us for 50% off.  I can’t wait to get some sheets on it!

12-10-2012

As for the mobile…I made it!  After loving some that are sold on Etsy.com, I researched how to make them and decided to save a few (or a lot of) bucks and make it myself.  I will have a tutorial coming soon, but the gist of the project is that you take colored strips of scrapbooking paper and sew them together using a sewing machine, attach to dowels and hang.  SUPER SIMPLE and under $5 to make; versus spending anywhere from $25-$50 on Etsy.

As for the nod to Where’s Waldo in the corner, I found the striped “laundry basket” at Hobby Lobby for 50% off.  It could turn into toy storage, but either way, I love the pop of red!

IMG_9619

The prints above the crib came from on Etsy.com (see this post for more info) and I just painted the matting inside the frames (which we already had) for a bit more pizzazz.  I also added bit of yellow and white chevron duck cloth I found at Hobby Lobby (love) behind the larger print to add some visual interest and pattern.

Boppy and Boppy Covers:

IMG_9670

I am also the owner of a Boppy pillow and two ADORABLE covers made by my Nana.  I have heard great things about Boppys as well as My Brest Friend (which I am registered for) when it comes to nursing, but I wasn’t too impressed with the Boppy cover selection.

With so many adorable fabrics on the market, I knew that Nana could whip out a few covers in no time if I provided the pattern and supplies.  Boy was I right – she is so stinking talented and had these puppies whipped out in about an hour total…maybe not even that long.

The best news, I found the insert at Once Upon a Child for $10 (in great condition) and only needed 1 yard of fabric and a zipper for each Boppy cover.  The pattern I found on Etsy for $2.50.  So, instead of buying it all brand new; which would total around $40-$50, I got the pillow, pattern, supplies and TWO adorable covers for $25.  Score!  Thanks Nana!

The Nook:

IMG_9648

As for the rest of the nursery, we have created a nice little nursing/reading/relaxing nook with some mood lighting and fun details.

IMG_9660

Again, using frames we already and free digital prints I found online we created a small collage of kid friendly pictures.  Much like the ones above the crib, I used fabric as a mat (brown gingham) for one frame and also painted the matting and frame of another (all supplies I already had on hand – no purchase necessary!).

IMG_9654

Another cool wall art idea that my mom actually purchased for the nursery the weekend we told her we were expecting are these “wall saucers”.  I don’t know their actual name, but they are a cool 3D edition to the corner that adds a fun and whimsical element.

They are made by a company called Umbra and can be found online or at Target (that’s where we found these!) for around $20.  They offer lots of different shapes and sizes and are SUPER easy to put up and can even be relocated if desired.

IMG_9662

IMG_9644

Another personal touch we (I) added was this precious pillow.  Mike’s dad gave it to me a couple of Christmases ago and said that it was Mike’s from when he was younger.  The best part – Mike actually made it.  He’ll probably kill me for showing it, but I thing it’s so cute for the nursery!

Lighting:

IMG_9642

One problem that I was having with our repurposed changing table was the space.  I originally had a table lamp next to where the changing pad was going to go.  Then, in looking at lots of pictures of changing tables, I realized that I needed that space to have easy access to baskets of diapers and wipes. So… the table lamp had to go.

The solution?  A wall lamp!

IMG_9637

I found the wall lamp above from Ikea for around $20.  It was easy to install and takes up ZERO space on the changing table.  Perfect!

The only problem that that it is a bit bright from what will be the baby’s viewpoint on the changing pad.  Mike actually discovered this and makes a valid point.  I think we’re going to try to make some sort of diffuser to block some of the light…we’ll keep you posted on that idea!

IMG_9646

Now there is space for the diaper basket next to the changing area which I found at Burlington Coat Factory (who knew they had awesome stuff) for around $6 and eventually a wipe dispenser as well.  I love the rustic feel of the basket with the metal and burlap.

IMG_9632

Accessories:

We have just a few knick-knacks in there for now located on a small accent table.  One of which is an adorable lime green owl my mom found and some adorable books from my friend Leigh (these were her boys’ favorites) flanked by a wooden salamander and T-Rex that Mike and I plan to paint and personalize.

12-11-2012

Most of the accessories will transfer over to the bookshelves once they are completed, but are resting on the table for now.

So cozy!

Diaper Bag and more…

12-11-20121

I was also so excited to receive my diaper bag!  I found it online right before Thanksgiving for 30% off and free shipping!  It is made by Babymel and got pretty good reviews on Amazon.  I love the red stripes (can you tell I’m into stripes) and the cross body wear-a-bility.

I also ordered a travel changing pad and wipes case from Etsy.  These were not on sale, but rather a “to me, from me”.  It thought I deserved to look fashionable while changing diapers!

As for the rest of our nursery “to do” list we just have a few more DIY projects and we’ll be finished:

  • DIY tree bookshelf
  • DIY wall abacus
  • closet reconfiguration and shelf addition (more storage needed!)
  • DIY clothes size dividers
  • curtain treatment (a surprise that I’m so excited to reveal!)

Thanks to a handy husband, Pinterest and Etsy our nursery is taking shape and is (almost) ready to welcome our little boy…he’ll be here before you know it!

Pintastic

As summer (for me) is coming to a close, many people have been asking me, “What have you been doing over the break?”  Well, since this was the first summer ever (since I began teaching 9 years ago) that I haven’t worked I didn’t really know what to do at first.  I usually do camps throughout the summer which is great cash wise, but not as fun relaxation/productivity wise.

So, what have I been doing?  Playing on Pinterest!

images

If you aren’t familiar with this little P above, let me give you a rundown.

Pinterest is an online pin board that is has an abundance of information in all different categories; DIY, design, home décor and food/drink are some of my favorites.

It’s like having a huge corkboard filled with tons of pictures and magazine clippings on your computer and neatly organized into folders or “boards”.  There is no saving images or writing down websites; by just hitting the “pin” button it’s all stored for you.

Although there are already preset categories that you can peruse, there is also a search box that you can type in anything and get amazing and inspiring results.

The best news?  Besides being free, Pinterest doesn’t just show you the picture of a project; the pins (most of the time) provide the website for more information/tutorials.  Like Facebook and Twitter, you can also follow people (friends or famous) in which you have similar interests.  This makes it easy to share pins without any of the work.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

I will admit, in the beginning it can be quite addictive, but now I just visit when I’m needing a little inspiration or am craving an easy and quick DIY project.

Below are a few of my latest pins…I can’t wait to try some of these!

As far as what I have been doing all summer, here are just some of  my personal Pintastic projects that I have accomplished over the past two months thanks to inspiration from Pinterest.  Check it out!

  • Wall arrangements (kitchen, bedroom, empty frames)

IMG_1126

I loved the idea of hanging a bowl on the wall in my kitchen.  It works perfectly to create a simple but funky vignette.  I smile every time I walk by!

IMG_1129

As for our bedroom, we had a huge (slanted) blank wall above our bed and tons of old frames.  I also had this beautiful antique window that actually came from my Great Grandmother Hilty’s house.  I took a little bit of spray paint to a few of the frames, raided my pantry for a few plates and came up with this arrangement.  So far, so good – none of them have landed on our heads!

  • DIY lamps and lampshades (recovering, spray painting)

IMG_1131

These lamps (above) came from my friend Lynn and got a double dose of DIY.  I spray painted the bases bright yellow (they used to be brown) and then covered the shades, previously beige, by following a simple tutorial with some spray adhesive and leftover wedding fabric.  They look brand new and SO FUN!

IMG_1141

This lamp is one of my favorites, but seemed to get lost with the off-white shade.  With a bit of painters tape, which is awesome for thinking up any design you desire, and spray paint I had a new, sassy shade in no time!

Organization (kitchen, office)

IMG_1132

This piece of Ikea furniture is located in our foyer/entryway and was becoming a bit of a cluttered mess.  I loved the open shelving, but also wanted to find a way to incorporate functionality.

So, I took out all of the “space fillers” that were previously there and transferred all of my bake ware, serving platters, colorful mixing bowls and cake plates to be on display AND easy to reach!  It has worked out perfectly!

IMG_1138

Another huge project this summer was making a home office.  This area(above) used to be a wasted space until a few months ago.  I don’t have a before picture, but this space is tricky since the air conditioning vent is on this wall (it’s underneath the desk).  Therefore, we never knew what to put against the wall since it had to be “breathable”.

Well, I had the idea of making it into our home office even though it is part of our dining room (we have a very open floor plan).  Mike was a bit unsure at first, but after our friends offered us a desk – they didn’t even know we were looking for one – I jumped at the chance.

The result?  It is awesome!  The space is filled perfectly and we finally have a wall to put our diplomas on (mine is the one in this pic, but Mike’s is ready to be hung as well)!  I love the space and openness that this area lends (our old desk was tiny and used to be in a back bedroom).  Perfect for blogging!

Painting, stripes, frames

IMG_1135

Did I mention that I had tons of frames!  I don’t know where they all came from, but had a plethora of brown frames.  BORING.  So, with a little bit of painters tape and paint – I used spray paint on the left frame and acrylic on the right – I have fun, and adorable frames to display on our desk.  LOVE!

IMG_1140

No paint?  No problem, try duck tape!

This oblong cork board used to hang above our old desk and was a little boring.  I was originally going to paint the diagonal stripes on, but then I saw the roll of duck tape in the garage.  Bingo.

The whole project took about 5 minutes and can be changed in seconds if you get tired of it by simply ripping the tape off.  Score!

So, this was my summer in a nutshell; creating new spaces and treasures from items that were already here – up cycling at its best if you ask me!  I am so happy with the results and love coming home to a much more colorful and whimsical house each and every day.

I do, however, think Mike is ready for school to start.  He’s scared that if he sits somewhere for too long I’m going to spray paint him, too!

Have a happy hump day!

Spring Sprucing

Instead of spring cleaning, I have been spring sprucing!  It’s amazing how a week off, random items just sitting around and a couple of cans of spray paint can spruce a house right up!

This is a great way to add dimension to your house without spending beaucoup bucks.  Pick your paint, prep your area and item and then spray away; but be sure you’re not close to anything you don’t want painted!  Most of all, have fun with it!

Here are a few of my creations, with a couple more things on my list.

  • This tarnished fruit basket from my mom via my nana went from drab to fab in about 10 minutes!

  • These brown finial bookends were given to me by my mom a while ago and got lost on one of my bookshelves.  Now they look fabulous holding my cookbooks on our buffet!

After-

  • This iron leaf basket blended in with everything around the house.  Not anymore!

---For the next couple of pictures I don’t have before and after shots.  I got too excited and just started spraying before I could take pics (oops), but I do love the results!

  • This magazine holder given to me by my Nana went from a faded celery green to a bright turquoise – love!

IMG_5878

  • Below is my napkin basket that lives in the pantry.  I have had this basket forever and finally decided to give it a makeover.  It’s much brighter and happier!

IMG_5880

  • This was a galvanized lantern that we bought to use for some of our wedding decorations.  Luckily the glass came out easily which made the paint job super simple.

IMG_5881

  • Lastly, this super cool and unique vase was given to me by my Aunt Dawnie.  I love the mason jar feel and wanted to liven it up just a bit.  The red helps pop the top and holder and definitely makes a fun statement next to our couch.  So fun!

TIP:

I would definitely recommend gloves, they will save you many trips to the sink!

Good Luck!

“Stamp”ede

Happy hump day everybody!  I know I’m always glad to make it to Wednesday and have the weekend in sight!

Today’s post is just a fun DIY project that can turn any blank stationary into something personal  by using a simple stamp.  These personalized cards are great to give as a gift (perfect for a hostess gift,or stocking stuffer) or to make for yourself.

So go ahead, make your mark!

IMG_2897

I found this adorable spoon and fork stamp at Joann Fabrics the other day and fell in love with it.  There are also many different types of stamps available at Michaels (they have a mason jar stamp – love!) and online at Etsy.com.

IMG_2866

It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3.  Pick your stationary or notecard, press your stamp on the ink pad color of your choice and transfer onto the paper.  Personalized stationary within seconds – love that!

IMG_2876

My mom had this “Lane” stamp made for me in college.  I hadn’t used it much until just recently and now it is one of my favorites.

Again, there are many sites online that offer stamp personalization, as well as many local office supply stores.  By “Googling” the information you can find many other options and stamp shops near your area.

IMG_2973

IMG_2893

Stamps are also great for personalizing invitations.  We used this pumpkin stamp as the trademark for all of our wedding invitations and thank you notes.

We saved tons of money by doing them ourselves and loved that we could carry the pumpkin theme throughout many details of the wedding.  It definitely added a more personal touch without the cost of professional printing.

IMG_2969

TIPS:

  • These stamps can also be used on gift tags, recipe cards or even seasonal notecards.  The possibilities are endless!
  • Many stamp shops will also personalize an address stamp to use on envelopes.
  • When buying stamps from Joann Fabrics or Michaels, look for 40%-50% coupons before you go.  Many times they have them in newspaper flyers or online.  I get them in the mail all the time and love to save a buck.
  • Another great gift idea for any time of year would be a personalized monogram stamp with ink pad and stamped notecards.  I love monograms!

Have fun, play around and enjoy!
