Menu Monday

What a fun weekend!  We celebrated our 3rd Annual Thankschristmakkuh gathering with all of our friends.  This is a unique celebration put on by our friends Jenny and Jeremy honoring Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah.  It is one of my favorite events of the year and this one didn’t disappoint!

Larry Latke was back and spry as ever.

This year, we all decided to add costumes into the tradition.  Mike went at Beerski, the alternate reindeer, and I concocted a pretty aswesome bow dress.  It’s amazing what a hot glue gun, a trip to Goodwill and Dollar Tree bows will get you!

We also had our share of ugly Christmas sweaters, Salvation Army bell ringers and dreidel cardigans to go around.

The pilgrims were there to watch over the food…which was delicious!

Everything was mouth watering.  Kudos to all!

When it was time to eat, Jamie lit the menorah while we all sat Pilgrim style at one long table and jammed out to Christmas music.  It was so awesome.

Good friends, good times, and good memories.  Happy Thankschristmukkah to all!

Memory Lane

My how things have changed!  As Mike and I were cleaning out our attic a couple of weekends ago he found a box full of old newspapers, certificates and this little gem:  The Rollins College 2000 Volleyball Program.

IMG_9493

I started laughing immediately and couldn’t wait to share it with some of my old teammates which are still some of my very best friends.

Well, last night I had the chance.  Our friend and teammate Noelle (Rollins ‘03) aka NoMo was in town and with our friend and teammate Kamrin (Rollins ‘04) we all met up with her (along with our hubbys) for dinner and a walk down memory lane.

We decided to really make our night nostalgic by eating at “Beans” aka The Cornell Campus Center or plainly, the Rollins Cafeteria.  Just walking in it felt like old times!

The food was just as expensive, but really quite good.  We all commented on how easy we once had it.  Nutritious, ready to eat meals on a pre-paid meal card that just got swiped.  No shopping, cooking or cleaning up after meals.  We had no idea how lucky we were!

We all got a chuckle out of the Meal Plan Average Balance card posted on the cash registers…we ALWAYS ran out of money before the end of the semester and had to beg our other teammates to pay for our meals with their remaining balances!

After eating at Beans we headed out and about reminiscing the whole time and laughing hysterically at our ridiculous hair-dos, crushes and stories while in college.

We stopped by the Olin Library (which was packed) for some coffee, since of course, they just opened a 24 hour cafĂ©.  They surely didn’t have that when we were there, if so we probably would have studied there instead of Panera or Starbucks!

Knowles Memorial Chapel at night – one of my favorite views on campus.

After our library pit stop we headed over to our freshman dorm, Ward Hall.  We waited outside until somebody with an access card came up and then convinced them to let us in.  The dorm was totally renovated a couple of years ago and we wanted to check it out.

Kam even found her old room!

All was well until we got caught by the R.A.…oops.  We were promptly asked to leave the building which we did with a few giggles on the way out.  So funny to be over 30, pregnant and getting kicked out of a college dorm.  Priceless.

Apparently he didn’t know that I still had my R-card (circa 1999).

Our last stop was the Harold and Ted Alfond Sports Center aka “the gym”; where so many of our hours were spent practicing and playing volleyball during our four year stint.

The front desk greeters were much more pleasant than Mr. R.A. (who in all fairness was just doing his job) and loved that we flashed our 2000 Volleyball Program.  They promptly let us in to explore and relive our glory days.

Where the magic happened.  Literally blood, sweat and tears.

Scholarship wall – yeah Kam!

All in all, a great night with great girls.  There is just something about our team and our bond that is second to none.  I wouldn’t trade our Rollins years for anything in the world.  For those of you who couldn’t join us, believe me you were there in spirit!!!

Giddy Up!

I love weeknight parties!  Especially weeknight parties with flannel and cowboy boots.

This past Thursday we headed over to our friends, Kamrin and John’s house, to celebrate their son’s first birthday.

Here’s the recap…yeehaw!

Palmer's bday1

We were there to celebrate this guy (see below).  Palmer was turning 1 that day and was so excited about his cowboy themed party.

His nickname is Duke, and Kam ended up creating a spectacular dude ranch just for him.

IMG_5996

His sister, Keltin, is my Goddaughter and my favorite 3 year old around!  She was definitely in party mode with her hat and bandana and ready to celebrate.

Luckily the rain stayed away and the outdoor details stayed in place. The weather was quite “touch and go” for a bit before the party started.

There were bandanas for everyone, chalk board tables, bubbles for the kids and even a game of horseshoes.

Palmer's bday2

Everything was so festive!

I was asked by Kamrin to prepare and cater the food for the event.  I, of course, said yes and was so honored that she asked.  This was the first official catering gig since the whole “Grocery Lane” idea popped in my head and I was so excited.

I would have been at the party anyway, but loved playing an integral part in making it extra special for the birthday boy.

The cowboy-esque menu was both kid and adult friendly and featured the following items:

  • BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders
  • Napa Salad (the favorite)
  • Potato Salad
  • Watermelon
  • Tater Tots
  • Carrots w/ Ranch Dip
  • Corn Bread Muffins
  • Collard Greens (courtesy of Winter Park Urban Farm)

Kamrin’s husband and our friend, John, is the founder of the Winter Park Harvest Festival, Winter Park Urban Farm and is the owner of East End Market (coming soon).  The farm is actually located on the side yard of their house and is filled with delicious homegrown veggies.  To learn more about this local foodie movement and for more information check out www.alocalfolkus.com and follow @johnrife on Twitter.

After dinner, it was cake smashing time for Duke.  He had no clue the fun that was about to happen!

Smash-o-rama!

He wasn’t quite so sure about the whole thing at the beginning, but after a little support from his big sis, he dug in and ended up eating almost the whole (very large) cupcake!

Apparently something better was happening on the side that peaked the interest of K and P. This was the best family pic we could get, but still precious even without everybody looking.

After Palmer finished his dessert, the rest of the kiddos were treated to ice cream sandwiches in the shapes of cowboy hats, boots and sheriff stars.

The chocolate chip cookie base with cookie dough ice cream was a hit.  They were gobbled up and gave a nice reprieve from the humid temps.

Palmer's bday6

Although the adults were a bit jealous of the ice cream sandwiches, they weren’t left out.  Homemade banana pudding was on the menu for the “big” kids.

This textural and just sweet enough dessert definitely hit the spot and made for a great ending to a really fun night.

IMG_6064

After dessert, there was just enough time for a little bit more “coloring”, baby clean-up and ghost tours before it was bedtime for the little ones.

Palmer's bday8

The party favors were the last treat of the night.

The goodie bags, which consisted of s’mores making materials, were labeled and adorned with the cutest lantern stamps.  They were almost as cute as all of the little bitties at the party.

Palmer's bday4

After the kids left, it was our turn to have a little fun with the party trinkets as well.

Can you say, “Stache-o-licious”?

By the end of the night we were all pooped, especially Murphy, but it was worth it.  The party was a huge success with lots of love, laughing and really yummy food.

Happy 1st Birthday Palmer Duke!
